What to Wear to the Largest Casinos in the World

When you’re planning a trip, one of the questions that you may ask yourself is what do you wear to the casino? Depending on where you are planning to go, the answer to “what to wear to a casino” will be very different.

To give you an idea of the scope of the casino dress code, we have looked at some of the biggest, best and most famous casinos around the world. Nowhere will you find a white tie casino any more, those days are long gone. But some destinations still require a certain level of formality.

Although in many cases the dress code is optional, it is respectful to dress according to the requested standards. Your gambling experience will be that much more enjoyable if you don’t feel out of place. High rollers may be able to get away with breaking the clothing rules, but for the rest of us it is recommended to dress accordingly when we enter a new casino.

River Rock Casino Resort

Vancouver, Canada

River Rock is situated on the banks of the Fraser River in Richmond, a suburb of the beautiful Canadian city of Vancouver. The overall vibe is modern ski lodge, with plenty of wood and stone in the well-appointed rooms and public spaces. The resort is home to a 24-hour casino that is the largest in the province.

Like many North American casinos, there is little in the way of dress code. Just making sure that you are dressed at all is basically enough, and even flip flops are acceptable. The only thing that is explicitly prohibited is clothing that has vulgar or offensive language or imagery.

Casino de Monte-Carlo

Monaco

It should come as no surprise that the legendarily glamorous Casino de Monte-Carlo is one of the casinos to impose a fairly strict dress code. The beautiful setting and the adjoining Hôtel de Paris lend themselves to elegant attire, and under-dressed visitors may find themselves feeling out of place.

The casino dress code is only enforced during daytime hours, and morning visitors can even wear shorts and t-shirts. The official line is that such garments are tolerated, rather than encouraged. In the evening after 7pm men are obliged to wear a jacket or blazer in the private rooms. These can be rented at the premises if necessary.

Less is explicitly said about the specific code for women, but elegant evening wear is recommended. Note that even under the casual daytime guidelines there are some limits. Faded or torn jeans, beachwear, sports clothing and flip flops are never permitted.

The Venetian

Macao

This is one of the world’s largest casino resorts, featuring a strikingly realistic recreation of the Italian city for which it is named. With just shy of 3,000 rooms in the hotel, the complex welcomes millions of visitors annually. Similar to its sister casino in Las Vegas, the dress code at the Venetian in Macao falls into the smart casual category.

When it comes to casino attire, the code that is encouraged includes modest clothing for both men and women. Nobody will be turned away for having short sleeves, but longer ones are preferred. As long as you look relatively well-turned out, there should be no issues. Jackets are not necessary, which is welcome news considering how hot the summers can be in Macau.

Palms Casino Resort

Las Vegas, USA

Like the majority of popular casinos in Las Vegas, the casino at the Palms resort does little in the way of enforcing any kind of dress code. If you are visiting purely for the gaming tables, then just about anything goes. Especially during the day, most visitors can be seen wearing very casual attire.

The Palms is about much more than the casino, however. The premises hosts a huge and eclectic collection of modern art, spread out through the casino, bars and restaurants on site. If you wish to dine, drink a cocktail or visit one of the nightlife venues, then you will need to dress a little smarter.

The rule here is business casual, although it is not rigorously enforced. So-called muscle shirts seem to be where they draw the line, but ripped jeans and flip flops at one of the high-end restaurants will provoke some frowns from staff. With all the incredible art on display, it would be a shame not to dress the part as well. The whole venue is incredibly Instagram-worthy, so make sure your outfit is too.

La Mamounia

Marrakesh, Morocco

The casino itself is not the largest, but the setting of La Mamounia is breathtaking. The royal gardens that adjoin the casino and hotel are a profusion of scented flowers, and the buildings exude Moorish elegance. In such surroundings, it’s no wonder that a strictly elegant dress code applies.

After 6pm, shorts, t-shirts and sports shoes are absolutely not tolerated, along with flip-flops. Many a disappointed tourist has been politely refused entry for attempting to visit in typical garb. La Mamounia wants to uphold its sophisticated image, and anyone deemed not to fit the bill will be out of luck.

Keeping the word elegant in mind will help when deciding on an outfit. In the hot season formal evening wear is not expected, but keeping it classy is always the best bet.

WinStar World Casino

Thakerville, USA

Officially the largest casino in the world by floor space, Oklahoma’s WinStar World has thousands of electronic games, a poker room with 55 tables and around 100 other table games. The resort is host to regular music and entertainment events, and guests can dine at one of the many restaurants and eateries on site.

The dress code is firmly casual, although anyone is welcome to dress smarter if they wish. Some specific items are prohibited, namely sports or athletic wear, baseball caps and hoodies, baggy clothing, work boots and flip flops. Some special events may have more formal clothing requirements.

Les Ambassadeurs

London, UK

Now that the Ritz Club has officially closed its doors, Les Ambassadeurs no longer has competition for the most exclusive casino in the UK’s capital. The original Bond casino, the tables featured in the very first 007 movie Dr. No back in 1962. With a long and prestigious history, the London landmark is a private members club frequented by celebrities and royalty. A cool thousand pounds buys a temporary week-long membership.

As you would expect, the dress code is formal. This is a black tie optional establishment, so visitors must dress as though they are attending the opera. Elegant evening gowns for the ladies, although a modest cocktail dress is also acceptable. Men can take their cue from Mr Bond himself, and a tie and jacket are absolutely essential.

Gold Reef City Casino

Johannesburg, South Africa

The Gold Reef City Resort in the south of Johannesburg is a huge entertainment complex and theme park. Frequented by locals and tourists alike, it is a popular family destination. As well as the extensive casino, which has 47 gaming tables and more than 1500 slots, the site houses dining, accommodation, shopping and theme park rides. Guests can also visit a museum dedicated to the gold mine that the resort was built on.

Considering that most visitors will be dressed for a long day out, the casino has no official dress code. Men without shirts and women in beachwear will be refused entry, but that is about as far as it goes. The only exception is the Salon Privé which is rather more exclusive. Women will not feel out of place in a cocktail dress here, and a shirt and slacks are a must for the men.

Marina Bay Sands

Singapore

Marina Bay Sands is one of the most impressive buildings on the Singapore skyline. A trio of jutting monoliths are topped by a 340 metre roof garden featuring an infinity pool with views over the city. Casino visitors don’t have access to the pool unless they are also staying at the resort hotel.

The rules for casino attire smart casual, although reports from visitors indicate that they are not enforced very strictly. To be on the safe side, avoid shorts above the knee for men any shoes that you would wear to the beach. The casino requests that men wear sleeves as well.

Caliente Casino Hipódromo

Tijuana, Mexico

Just a short drive from San Diego in the USA is the Mexican border city of Tijuana. The premier casino in the city is Caliente Hipódromo, open for almost a century and also home to a racetrack. American visitors expecting something akin to Vegas had better think twice, however. Caliente has much stricter rules when it comes to casino attire.

Business casual is the order of the day here. Smart shirts and an optional jacket for men, but lose the tie. For women it is frowned upon to show too much skin, and guests have been turned away for revealing midriff in a crop top. Understated and elegant is what to aim for, and once again nothing that would look more appropriate at the beach.

Summary

As we can see, the rules concerning casino attire and what to wear to a casino vary significantly around the world. Older European casinos remain rather more formal, although even the ultra-exclusive Les Ambassadeurs does not ask for full white tie. New world and Asian casinos are more relaxed, and in Vegas pretty much anything goes. On the whole, dress codes have become more casual over time.

Even those that claim to have a dress code often fail to impose it on guests, especially in Singapore and Macau. If in doubt, a quick enquiry to the customer service at a casino should clarify what to wear to a casino and their dress code. Quite often casinos have a different set of rules for day and evening, so it can also depend on when you visit.

A good rule of thumb is to go for smart or business casual, so a nice shirt and slacks or chinos for the guys with shoes and socks. Ladies can rarely go wrong with a cocktail dress, so long as it is not too far above the knee. In fact, showing less skin is preferable for both sexes and outside of Vegas men should always keep their shoulders covered.
